Cyber Threats: the U.S. Government Is Not Immune and Neither Are You!

cybersecurity

If it can happen to the U.S. government, cyber attacks can happen to you.  And experts say it's not a matter of IF it will happen but WHEN.  Small and Mid-sized businesses (SMBs) shouldn't think they are powerless, however.  There are steps you can take right now to protect your company, employees, customers, and data.

J.D. Harrison proposes 5 steps to take to stay ahead of cyber criminals.

1. Play big brother - You simply have to stay on top of what employees can or can't access using company equipment.

2. It only takes a minute - Update software often. Critical software updates are meant to help you plug vulnerabilities and block offenders.

3. Don't put all of your eggs in one basket - Still only saving to your hard drive?  Bad move.  Make multiple copies of your data, and don't only depend on the cloud either!

4. Use your greatest asset: your employees - Provide training on how to create strong passwords, understanding the pitfalls of public WiFi hotspots, clicking on links and opening attachments etc..

5. Hope for the best, plan for the worst - Always assume the worst can happen and continuously and consistently monitor your network.  Responding quickly will go a long way toward minimizing the drama.
